Importance of style-recognition?

Post by ArendsArt »

How important is a unique style for an artist?

I notice in the advertising of artists who feel they have a unique creative style, they are very quick to play up this fact.

Some of the most well-known commercial artists of all time had very unique styles. On the other hand, there have been other artists who have had very unique styles who have remained pretty much in obscurity for their entire lives. So I would like to throw this out to the group: how important IS a unique style for an artist's success?

Also, how do you go about developing your own style? Some artists have fallen upon a unique style almost immediately, others say it developed slowly over a period of many, many years. Plugins can add some unique effects to an artist's repertoire. The problem is, there are so many wonderful effects available it is almost impossible to decide on a single one.

Have any artists used effects available in a plugin to create a name for themselves? Is it necessary to settle on a single recognizeable "look" in order to become recognized? Is it confusing to art buyers when an artist has a large number of different "looks" in his portfolio, rather than a single coherent image?
