flash card reader

When using my reader I get a notice that my card needs formatting. I just started doing this suddenly. One day everythings working, next day poof, nothing. I did try formatting but a window pops up saying that the card cannot be formatted.
The pix do show in camera. I unplugged/replugged and restarted the computer, still no sucess.
