The best "free" solution I have found is to use GraphicConverter to do the conversion, but there may be better ways...

You can use the free software that is supplied with your camera. Alternatively you can upgrade to Photoshop CS or use another commercial RAW converter like CaptureOne.
GraphicConverter only works on the Mac.
