cannot import anything else than PDF and Epson Twin files..

Hi,
Needless to say I am not very smart with these softwares....
I just installed Photoshop 6.0 and when I want to import a bmp or JPEG file the import menu doesn't give me the list of these extensions. It gives me only PDF, Annotations, Epson twain, WIA epson and WIA logitech.
How can I enable the rest?
