The latest version of photopaint claims
You can mask an area of a JP2 image to define a region of interest (ROI) to which you can apply a lower compression setting and, therefore, improve the image quality of that area.
Anybody have any more information on how to do this? a tutorial maybe? :)

I was not aware of this until reading your post, but I will definitely keep my eyes open for further developments. A quick google-search turned up next to nothing on the subject, but perhaps my keywords needed some fine-tuning.
