Unable to colourise !

Sorry to ask a dumb question ~ but when I open an edge which is black and white and then drop a coloured photo into the selected edge - the photo changes from colour to black and white.
How please do I add colour to the edge and then when dropping a photo into then edge, retain the coloured photo.
I am using Photoshop CS3
