sharpening techniques

Postby msellers » Fri Aug 29, 2003 2:59 pm

My usual routine is to sharpen the scan in Photoshop then sharpen again at the final print size.Is it ok to use FocalBlade twice? What technique should I use to sharpen at the scan size if different from sharpening at the final print size?

You can sharpen an image a second time if you didn't sharpen it very much the first time. Otherwise the edges will be damaged. Some people recommend to sharpen at first with a low radius (0.2 - 0.5) and a second time with a larger one (1.0 or higher).

So if you want to sharpen two times with FocalBlade, you can use "Very Fine Details" in the first step and "Medium Details" in a second step. In both cases it is probably better to use "Light Textured".

However, I recommend to sharpen only once. Sharpening twice doesn't work better, you don't have so much control of the effect and it needs more time. When sharpening twice the risk to add too strong halos is larger.
