apply texture to a shape

I wish to apply a surface texture to an irregular shape in my images. For example, applying a textured pattern to a human body. I know that there are plugins that allow me to apply to regular shapes like globes, cylinders etc but have been unable to find one that applies to an irregular shape and follows the contours of the shape.

Is anyone aware of such a plugin for Photoshop

The only plugin of that kind that I came across yet is StyleDraper from www.agetechnologies.com. This plugin is quite expensive with $910.

However, it is also possible to reproduce such an effect in Photoshop with a lot of work by using the Displace effect, masks and layers.

Thanks Harald. I had tried with the displacement map and to be honest have never found to be particularly successful... Look like I should persevere as the $910 would be hard to justify for the use I would make of the utility.

Thanks for your input

Well, the tricky part is to create a mask for the Displace filter. This greyscale mask has to be saved as a PSD file and opened in the Displace filter. It makes the Displace filter displace the pixels according to the mask. So you have to create a mask that corresponds to your shape.

The Displace filter displaces a pixel whose mask value is smaller than 128 to the left and top and whose mask value is larger than 128 to the right and bottom. The larger or smaller above or below 128, the stronger the displacement.

I know this stuff is quite complex and it can be a pain to create a usable mask. Some tools like the Gradient tool from KPT 3 can be a help when applying them to a selection of the shape. Of course you also have to use the Levels tool to center the values around 128.

I have to admit that if I had to do such a thing, it would be easier for me to program my own displace filter than to create a mask and use Photoshop's Displace filter.

I did this accidentally the other day and rather liked the result. I was using PSP8 but it could be possible to do it in PS too. I was using the magic wand to select several areas of a photo. I got ready to fill the areas and inadvertently had a texture selected. It filled those areas beautifully! Make your mesh a texture and try it!

Here's a link for a PhotoShop Displacement Map tutorial for wrapping patterns and/or textures around curves and/or folds of an object. It was written by Polykarbon - who has other tutorials at the site.

I've not tried it yet, but it looked interesting enough to bookmark to return to - perhaps it might help someone here...
