Feature wish Focalblade: Delay for Auto Preview

Postby wolfgang_guelcker » Fri May 20, 2005 8:28 am

Dear Harald Heim,

I'm a very content user of Focal Blade, but there is one minor thing, which bothers me: the mechanism of the auto preview.

If the auto preview checkbox ist checked after start of the plugin, immediatly a preview is calculated which takes time but which is unnecessary most of the time for me, when i wish to select another detail, another split view etc. So i have to switch off the auto preview, do the adjustments and switch it on again.

I know that there is a workaround for this: switch off the auto preview before the final OK, so that it is switched off when FB is started the next time. Unfortunately i forget it most of the time. But every time i want to change more than one thing after the first preview I have to remember to switch off the preview before.

So to make working with FB smoother:

Wouldn't it be possible to build in a delay for the auto preview according to the principle

If nothing has happended for n seconds, do the preview.

This doesn't has to be necessarily configurable, a simple checkbox with a fixed value, say 2 seconds, at the bottom of the FB window would be great.

The default value would be 0, so the standard behaviour would not change.

The feature is something which a learned to like with another very good plugin: Neatimage for noise reduction.

BTW: i don't have any problems with FB on Photoshop CS2 and 16 bit images.

So you want a feature that delays the preview update by 2 seconds in order to be able to do several quick adjustments without making the preview update after each adjustment?

I could replace the Auto Preview check box with a combo box with different options or I could add a context menu to the Auto Preview check box to select the update time. I will see if I can add that in the upcoming Version 1.04.

I thought about it a bit more. Basically you can stop the automatic preview calculation by deactivating the Auto Preview check box and activating it again after you did the adjustments. Because you suggested this new feature I guess it is too inconvient for you.

Anyway, I think an even better solution is to immediately restart the preview rendering if another slider is dragged. That way you don't need to wait until the preview is updated before you can change the settings.

Some time ago I made some tests in that direction, but didn't solve all problems that are involved with that approch. I'm nevertheless confident that such a feature will make it into a future FocalBlade version.
