PSE crashes

Postby pereh » Sun Apr 07, 2013 5:05 pm

Hello,

I have PSE10, Win 7 Home 64-bit. After installing Elements XXL and starting PSE, a window showed up saying that new menu entries will be highlighted etc., then PSE 10 crashed.
Error: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library / Runtime Error! / Program: ....ElementsXXL... / R6025 - pure virtual function call"
Then I had to terminate PSE with the task manager. The crash comes every time when starting PSE. After uninstalling Elements XXL, PSE runs normally again.
What can I do to get Elements and PSE running?

Thank you.

This seems to be a problem that occurs rather seldom. I suspect that it is caused by a conflict with another plugin.

Here are two options:

1. You could move all plugins out of the Plug-Ins sub folder of Photoshop Elements 10 and only leave the ElementsXXL32.8li plugin there. Then restart Photoshop Elements and see if the problem vanished. If it did, move the other plugins back, one by one. At some point the problem may reoccur. If you let me know which plugin causes the conflict, I should be able to fix this problem.

2. You could test the Photoshop Elements 11 trial version and see if the problem occurs there too. Install your plugins there too to see if the problem still occurs.

There was another user with the same problem. The error message and crash did not occur for him in Photoshop Elements 11 and the problem vanished in Photoshop Elements 10 after he moved the other plugins out of the Plug-Ins folder and back again.

Here is what I did:

- Option 1: nothing happened, the error did not reoccur
- Restore of the drive image I have made before Step 1
- install ElementsXXL: it crashed, same error as mentioned before
- move all non-standard plug-ins except Elements XXL out of / back into the PSE plug-in folder
- everything works, no error.
Is there an explanation for this?

Thank you for your help.

So you mean after moving all plugin out of the plugin folder and back again, the crash does not occur again?

If that is the case, my only explanation is that the moving in/out of the plugins changed the file dates, so that Photoshop Elements accesses the plugins in a different order, which makes the problem disappear.

Yes, just moving out and back again fixed the problem. The dates of the plug-ins did not change, btw.
So now that it was running, I uninstalled and re-installed ElementsXXL: no problem. Then I uninstalled it, restarted the PC and installed it again: no problem. However, in both cases, the window that usually pops up the first time you run Elements did not appear.
I could do some more testing if you let me know what to look for.

Add. Info: I guess the ElementsXXL 'Welcome' window did not appear because the ElementsXXL preferences are not deleted during uninstall (I have changed 1 preference).

Right, the file date does not change. Not even the file access date. So at the moment I am also a bit clueless why it works. Maybe there is no plugin conflict involved. Maybe I will come up with an idea later and will be able to fix it. Luckily the problem only seems to occur for very few people.

Add. info: it suffices to move those plug-ins that are of type 8li out / into the plug-in folder to get ElementsXXL to run.
-----
Now I have tracked this down to 1 plug-in folder: AlienSkin. It contains the folders 'Exposure 4', 'Snap Art 3', and the files 'Alien Skin Autolayer 4.8li' and 'Autolayer2.8li'.
After restoring the old image and installing ElementsXXL, just moving this folder out/in made PSE + ElementsXXL run.

Maybe this helps to find the error.

Thanks! That certainly helps.

Would you please restore the old disk image and only move Autolayer2.8li out? Autolayer2.8li does not seem to be installed by Snap Art 3 and Exposure 4. I have these plugin files here in the PSE 10 plugin folder (except Autolayer2.8li), but there is no crash.

Maybe Autolayer2.8li was installed with an older Alienskin plugin and it was not uninstalled with the other files. Can you send me the file Autolayer2.8li?

I moved 'Autolayer2.8li', but PSE still crashed. I moved every other file one after another, but PSE kept crashing. After I have moved out all files of the Alien Skin folder, PSE + ElementsXXL ran, and was still ok after moving all files back into the folder. So I really have no clue what is going on here...
I have sent you 'Autolayer2.8li'.

Add. info: I restored the old image and uninstalled Exposure and SnapArt. The uninstallers left Autolayer2.8li in the folder, so it really seems to belong to an older installation and I deleted it. After PC restart, I installed both plug-ins. Now there is only the other 8li file there. Then I installed ElementsXXL, and PSE crashed as before. I moved the contents of the Alien Skin folder out and back again, and it works. Moving the 8li file alone did not work. I am totally in the dark...

To be able to decide whether to buy or not, I made a final test: Restore that old image, move the Alien Skin folder away, install ElementsXXL, move the Alien Skin folder back in, check if it is running. And it is...
Maybe ElementsXXL just does not want an 8li-file as first in the row, or whatever. A strange behaviour (maybe related to the Preferences or the MediaDatabase.db3), and I hope the reason will be found.
So I am in. Thanks to Harald for his help.

Thanks for checking out the problem. So far I was not able to reproduce it myself. At least I can tell other Photoshop Elements 10 users with the same problem how to solve it.

According to the latest newsletter, you have solved this curious problem. May I ask what the cause was?

Thank you.

I was able to reproduce the problem when developing the MetaRaw automation plugin, so I found out what was causing it. The problem was that ElementsXXL displayed modal messages (welcome and trial messages) when Photoshop Elements started up, which somehow made the Alienskin Autolayer plugin crash. The Alienskin plugin must be doing something unconventional and the prolonged startup seems to confuse it.

MetaRaw and ElementsXXL 1.02 now display non-modal messages at startup, which avoids the problem. Non-Modal means that Photoshop Elements continues with the startup process and does not wait for any confirmation for the message(s).
