Reducing picture size

Postby hsegel » Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:37 pm

I have a large number of photgraphs that are 2576 X 1932. I need to reduce them to about 250 pixels wide for use in an online (intranet) photo directory and so I'm working with them at 72 dpi. What is the best way to reduce these and have the best possible quality in the end result?

Why not use a stand alone program like "Fookes Easy Thumbnails"
http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.php
and do a batch conversion

I only tested tools for upsizing images and not downsizing them, but I think these tools should be helpful, too. But it may turn out that a tool that is bad for upsizing my be quite good for downsizing.

Resizing Photos

Postby FrunkieB » Fri Jul 01, 2005 12:13 pm

I'm a PaintShop Pro man but this can easily be achieved by resizing a copy of the original. PSP automatically keeps the photo's dimensions in the same ratio. I'd think Photoshop would have a similar tool.

If you have Photoshop try it with Batchconversion, don't forget to sharpen the images a lttle bit after resizing.

Nearly every graphicapp (PS, PP, PSP) has a batchconversion and recording tool. If the results are good enough for you, then you should give it a try.

A second solution is, if the filenames are not important, use a rename tool (MultirenameJoe) and give all files a numeric structure. Then import all images as a sequence in your favourite compositing software (AE, DFX or something like this). :o
