New PNGOUT Plug-in Provides Expanded PNG Support

Post by Ardfry »

Ardfry Imaging, LLC (http://www.ardfry.com), has released the PNGOUT plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements for the Windows platform. The PNGOUT file format plug-in can create optimized PNG images that are usually smaller than those created with Save for Web and ImageReady. The plug-in also offers broad support for reading and writing PNG images.

The plug-in can optimize PNG images, which can reduce bandwidth costs, shorten download times, and improve the page load times of a website. The PNGOUT plug-in can remove all ancillary chunks from image files including the gamma chunk and also set the background chunk for broad browser support of PNG transparency. Open and save 8-bit Indexed+Alpha PNG images (i.e., 256 colors with 256 levels of transparency) without having to use a different tool.

The PNGOUT Plug-in is available for $29.95 from Ardfry Imaging, LLC. You can acquire a free trial download at

Hm, this is nothing but my personal opinion but... what as to palette reducing, existing apps seem to be good; what as to manipulating chunks, I can use freeware TwekPNG, and what as to compression, I doubt anything may beat pngcrush -b (which, apparently, I can run in batch). So I'm interested: what is the benefit of using your plugin as compared to this workflow?

RE: Questions on PNGOUT plugin

Post by Ardfry »

PNGOUT can consistently beat pngcrush.
I did my own comparison here http://www.ardfry.com/pngoutwin/image_compression.htm

If you search elsewhere for third-party comparisons, you will find that PNGOUT is the leader in the area of PNG optimization.

There are many tools on the market, both commercial and free, that provide some of the features. This plug-in saves people time by allowing them to do all of their workflow inside Photoshop. Also, for the vast majority of users, command line tools are too unfriendly.

The plugin also allows you to open 8 bit alpha channel palette PNG images in Photoshop. This is a first.
