B&W conversion in PhotoFreebies

Post by jamartini »

I'm running PS Elements and just downloaded Photo Freebies. After an hour of experimenting with the B&W feature I can't really see any difference between its effect and the "Image-Mode-Gray Scale" setting in PS Elements.

Am I missing something? Or will the plug-ins' benefits show themselves in some way I haven't discovered?

There is a difference! The grayscale conversion of PS Elements calculates the lightness of the color image and uses that as the grayscale version, while the PhotoFreebie plugin calculates a form of the luminance.

The difference is probably not so big on some images, but it is there. The PhotoFreebie plugin preserves the brightness of the image better when coneverting to grayscale.
