Lightmachine memory usage

I have used the Lightmachine product and have found it useful on smaller files. When I try to use it on much larger files I get an out of memory error from within PhotoshopCS. I scan 4x5 transparencies and often get a 850mb file. I have 2g of memory and a large scratch disk. Can you help me understand this better?
